Career Highlights
U.S. Army: Two combat deployments (Bosnia, Iraq) as a judge advocate and paratrooper.
U.S. Congress: Served as a U.S. Representative and became the first Iraq War veteran elected to the House.
Legislative leadership: Co-authored the 21st Century GI Bill expanding post-9/11 veterans’ access to higher education; the SAVE Act, cutting billions in wasteful government spending; and led the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” opening military service to millions of openly LGBTQ+ Americans.
Acting Secretary of the Army: Oversaw a 1.3-million-person organization and advanced major public-private partnerships.
